Why was match.com on Watchdog?

The automatic renewal thing has been used for years by a whole number of companies. Yes it might be immoral to profit from someone FORGETTING to cancel their subscription but it is still the fault of the customer. And suspending an account is totally different to cancelling an account. No organisation is going to make it easy to cancel something as they are there to make a profit. If you have ever tried to cancel a TV subscription or a bank account then you will see what I mean. I think Watchdog loses credibility when it features cases where the customers are clearly at fault. People need to use common sense.

90% of Watchdog items are what Martin Lewis would call 'consumer awareness', and what I would call 'people moaning because they choose not to read what they are signing up to'.Gone ... or have I?0

I think most criticisms were unfounded really but suspending an account might to some look like suspending payments also?
I know most of us on here are pretty well 'internet savvy' but a lot of people aren't!
Almost all subscription services (particularly internet based) are opt out rather than opt in for commercial reasons but Match.com (in common with others I could mention and not all dating!) only allow you to opt out after you have paid (not during the payments process) and then only by contacting them to stop further payments (i.e. not a manual switch you can alter in your own account profile settings).
That would be my only real criticism, and the only really valid one IMHO.
I'd be interested to know if match.com (or similar) companies take any legal action if payments are stopped or charged back at the bank though?Unless specifically stated all posts by me are my own considered opinion.

It's a direct debit not an auto-renewal, Freddie_Donut."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0
