Oil heating

Hi all

My ofch system is very hard on oil,I had it serviced recently.I got 900 ltrs of oil 3 weeks ago and about half of it is used.The heating would be on about 4-5 hours a day.It is a small house only 2 bedrooms,is this normal?

My last house had OFCH. It was a large 4 bed draughty cottage, with no insulation or double glazing so it took some heating. We used to order 1000ltrs at a time; and this would last us between 2.5 to 3 months during the winter. We had the heating on for about 9 hours a day and tried to keep the house at a temperature of 21 to 22 degrees when it was on, so I would agree that your boiler’s consumption is excessive.

Firstly, draught proofing & insulation should be considered.

Then, is your boiler energy efficient? Modern oil fired boilers are the most efficent at 97% compared with 91% for gas.

We have a four bed detached house. The AGA uses 2 tanks of oil per year (approx 1800 ltrs). The oil fired boiler (an old inefficient one) uses that amount between Sept & March alone :eek:

It sounds as though your old boiler's usage is not a lot different to ours. How old is your boiler?

Are you sure that the consumption is correct? It might be that the gauge is misreading the level of oil in your tank - can you dip it to check? Another possibility is that there is a leak from the tank or the pipe leading it into the house. If you can see any faults I think I would be inclined to ask around and get somebody who knows what they are doing to check it out

450 litres in 3 weeks is simply not on!

We`ve a 3 bed bungalow in N.E.(cold)Scotland and the 500 ltrs we topped up with last week should see us through to Feb or perhaps March.

You need to get someone to check your system out
