joint account happiness

Options
After years of separate accounts my wife and I opened a joint account and at last I am able to pay in a cheque in my wife's name into her bank account again.

Last time when I tried to pay a cheque into my wife's bank account using her card and pin in the chip and pin machine at the teller window the teller told me I shouldn't have her card and pin and took the card and cancelled it and my wife had to go through the bother of getting a new card and pin.

And that was me trying to pay money into her account.

Previously all I did was fill out a slip and hand it over the counter with the cheque and that was it.

Then came chip and pin and machines at the counter.

And yes I know I can use the ATM in the foyer of the bank, in fact that was what I had to do, but that isn't the point, I was made to feel like a criminal and lectured in front of other customers about using someone elses card.

So goodbye one bank and hello another.

I cant think of a bank who would allow you to use someone elses card. Good luck in your quest.

Personally I have never been asked for a card when paying money into someone elses account.

You still fill in a slip and hand it over at the counter. You don't need someone else's card in order to make a deposit into their account. I would think that the bank were well within their rights to cancel your wife's card - they are doing their jobs and protecting your wife's interests, not being difficult. Imagine your card got stolen and some woman tried to use it over the counter - wouldn't you want the bank to confiscate it because it clearly wasn't you using it?

Not if they were paying money in.

I know that, but it was a lot easier to put the card in the chip and pin machine, enter the pin and hand over the cheque.

Or is your bank still in the dark ages? With my old bank you had to queue to get a paying in slip, then go elsewhere to fill it out, then go back in the queue.

You don't need someone else's card in order to make a deposit into their account.

They wanted you to use the chip and pin method. Supposed to save time.

Now to figure out how to do it over the internet.

Scan the cheque and send them the jpeg?

All of the above may be true but when you consider the number of times that banks tell you "Never disclose your pin to anyone else under any circumstances", it should be fairly obvious that they are not going to allow someone to continue to use a card that has clearly been compromised.

The bank are absolutely correct in retaining and cancelling the card.

During my time as a bank employee I saw countless issues where PINs have been disclosed to 3rd party's, and in the event of a fraud the bank can refuse to compensate you if you have disclosed the PIN to another person.

I drive, my wife doesn't, the easiest way to pay a cheque into her account was me jump in the car and go to the bank and pay it in for her.

For her to pay the cheque into the bank herself was get to the car outside the house,

    then

    have I locked the door?

    go check,

it's too cold too warm wait till I put/take coat in house,

drive to corner, go back, need toilet, go to door, come back to car, need door key,

repeat every time she leaves the house.

no wonder I lock her in and go myself.

I pay cash and money into my son's and husband's account all the time. I don't have to put a PIN in, just hand over the card.

Last time I went, though, the stroppy mare told me I HAD to use the self-serve even though the money wouldn't be in the account until the following day, and it was needed that same evening. When she finally relented, she then refused to give me a recipt, until I insisted.
