Disabled vehicle to disabled vehicle tax.

Im getting my drive from wheelchair Paravan tomorrow and as its a specialised vehicle it has been disabled class since new (Im the second owner) and it still has a disabled tax disc on it so i assume I can change it to MY disabled tax at any tax issuing post office?
Has anyone donr this and can confirm what I think is the proccedure?
Im so looking forward to some independance, its over two years since I have been out alone and there is no use having a car if you need someone to load/unload your powerchair for you.

i'm not sure if i am answering the question you are actually asking but........
as far as i know the tax dis c needs to be 'your' tax disc and not that of another disabled person that owned the vehicle before.0 -
I'm not sure about how it works with an existing exempt vehicle. I had to go through the whole procedure when I a bought a standard automatic and it was a bit of a faff to start with, but now it's easily renewed online.
This link may help. http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_4022121
Have fun with your new independence (can't imagine how I'd get by without my car TBH).Just in case you were wondering (some have)..... I'm a woman!0 -
i thought that the exempt tax disc was linked to a person rather than the vehicle. no harm in checking though0

entitlement is linked to the person but not sure the disc itself is. There's a guide here but the number quoted is an 09 number and cost £1.53 per minute!!!!! There's a number for the Swansea switchboard on saynoto0870 01792 782341 - might be worth trying. I had to ring the DVLA about my tax last year and the lady I spoke with told me that they're generally quite lenient when it comes to disabled tax discs as long as there's no intent to defraud - e.g. renewing your tax late isn't trying to avoid paying because it's free anyway.
Edit to add that I ought to go to bed because I should have noticed that the guide isn't on the DVLA site - doh! Vehicle enquiries at the DVLA are on 0300 790 6802 which is a national rate number.Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

Thank you for your replies, I have the new letter type certificate ready which I havnt used before but I have never bought a specialist disabled vehicle before but any auto with hand controls which is why im not sure about the process of changing the disabled tax into my disabled tax disc.
Personally I would have taken my tax disc off and returned it to Swansea, thats what i have done to every vehicle apart from the motability one I had when motability said I should leave the tax disc on the car.0 -
I think this one is a ' class ' issue not a DLA issue. The vehicle is already exempt class, and so does not need to be transferred.
- these two are I think ! > I don't think an ordinary [ non general ] post office would be able to do it, and but I think that a ' general post ' office will be able to do it. < so I have no experience of doing it.
If I was in sunnyone's shoes I'd turn up with my (1) DLA404 (2) the tax disk off my old car (3) the new car documents (4) and valid insurance on the new car at my local DVLA. In this case its already registered as tax exempt, they should (A) put a full 12 months on the new vehicle (2) destroy the old tax disk, and (C) take the new car log book from me and re-issue a~n~other new one for it in my name.
For safety I'd take any / all documents for my old tax exempt car just in case they need any.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion.
