How do you melt chocolate?

Yesterday I was trying to melt chocolate in a microwaveable pot and it cracked. I did it many times before and all was fine so I must have used the wrong setting
Before I rush off the the shops and splash out on some fancy non-MSE chocolate melting kit, I would welcome any ideas on how to melt chocolate MSE way. I read that the best way to melt chocolate is in a metallic bowl over a pot of boiling water but I don't have such a bowl at the moment.
Many thanks.

I use a pyrex bowl either in the microwave or over a saucepan of hot water.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4

Pyrex bowl in the microwave. I do it in 30 second blasts on a medium setting (60% power on my microwave).:DYummy mummy, runner, baker and procrastinator

I use pyrex, doing it in the microwave you need to be careful not to burn it but over a pan of boiling water and keep stirring does the trick too

I hate melting chocolate. Pyrex dishes are always useful for it though - in the microwave over a saucepan. A microwavable bowl should do (do you not have a cereal bowl or something you could put in the microwave?).
I was exceedingly lucky and was bought a Bain Marie as a wedding present... I absolutely LOVE it. But not MSE one little bit!

Would you believe it that I don't have a pyrex bowl?!? I have a pyrex measuring jug though so although no good over a pot of boiling water (wrong shape), I'll give it a try in the microwave.
I bought nice strawberries and they are just waiting to be dipped into some freshly melted Easter egg

The Jug is perfect as long as it's glass! Also easier as it has a handle.
PS - Also love my pyrex bowls for microwaving rice.0 -
Always over hot water for me. You could just use a pudding bowl over a saucepan. Just be patient!0
