BT revenge

3 days back our phoneline was coming continuously engaged. Called BT & they said to check main socket which I did but could not get the phone working after connecting phone to main socket. So, BT send their engineer who did something to the main socket & hey presto!,called BT & the line started working. But he said BT would charge me 67 pounds as call out charge.Is this fair for 2 minutes work ? This does seem fishy as our phone was working fine till I applied for change of operator (Primus). Is there anything I can do. Please advise me.

    The main socket is BT's responsibility (which is why - except removing the bottom part to connect extesnions - you're not allowed to tamper with it).

    If the engineer 'did something;' to that socket to cure the fault, there should be no charge.
    Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    Not necessarily, if for example their phone had 'locked' and caused it to be connected to a call for the 3 days, then there would be a charge for the visit. The engineer could quite simply come out to the property and disconnect every plugged in device. This would result in a charge as they could have done that originally (As probably advised on the original fault reporting call)
    The charge is basically applied if you haven't done as instructed on the original fault report call, if it is down to your device's, or down to something you have caused.

    Thank you Heinz,Ongobay for your advice. As instructed by BT,I did disconnect all phones & then plugged it into the main socket but still could not get the phone to work.And as the engineer did the same thing, I suppose I have to pay their fees. Thanks, guys for for your advice.
