While some banks were identified as having potential security problems some time ago - HSBC were not one of them.
All the researchers could come up for them was "if you have a “key-logger” on your PC then it is possible for a third party to see what you have typed onto your computer" and that using this information it would be possible to break into an account within nine attempts.
However, a 'key-logger' would enable someone to see what you typed into your keyboard regardless of who you banked with and HSBC lock you out of their system anyway if you put in the wrong details more than 3 times.
So it was only really so-called researchers creating a scaremongering story for the the media.

from reading the posts i cant see any that mention any security problem in hsbc online banking.
The only gripes appear to be with HSBC in the same way you obviously have gripes with LTSB, nothing to do with online servicing.0 -
I am tempted by Smile but hubby is nervous about not having access to a branch. Is anyone else with smile?0

Ive never had a problem with them personally, and if you read other recent posts such as http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=324720 most people have been pretty happy with them.0

Had similar problem with my DW who liked the idea of a branch where she could go in and 'speak to someone' if anything went wrong. Touch wood, nothing has ever gone 'wrong' with our smile accounts. If it did, I'm fairly confident it could be sorted out over the phone or via secure messaging with no problems. Couldn't say that I would've been able to sort out ANY kind of problem with my old bank, and it had several branches where I live. smile get my vote every time and so far, so does first direct, although I'll not say that too loudly...0

I bank with halifax and barclays, halifax is a better layout but barclays tells you when you are eligable for account offers like O/D's ok not ood if you need to get out of debt but still handy non the less0
