Asus X51RL laptop battery powered boot-up blues

Odd one this - Daughter's laptop boots up normally if connected to the mains but hangs if you try to boot up on battery power (even if fully charged). The battery is new but (I only now discover) it was always so - DD forgot to mention it!
Once the boot sequence is over you can work normally on battery. Any thoughts guys?
