I can't see how it advantages the govt to push for such a scheme...... Sure they'd like us to be driving around in poverty class motors (so they can feel superior), but I can't see that it brings any profit or tax benefit to do this......

Another option to consider:

A smaller "normal" car for day to day use and then hire a car for your camping holidays.
Just subtract the cost of a weeks car hire from the savings in fuel consumption and the various emissions related taxes and charges you are going to have to pay.


Or an older car with no emissions data, what's the charging for cars still in the old tax bands?

I Don't think a=either model will fail to get up a hill. It might not be fast, but it'll get there.
When I was a kid, we used to go camping in a fully-laden Lada 1200 estate (4 adults, two kids to the South of France) and that probably had less than 50bhp. It certainly wasn't quick, but it got there.

Paying to park. What a con. I'd be after a payrise equivalent to the daily cost of this. If everyone got together and threatened to go on strike unless these charges were dropped, then the University would have to listen.

Mind you, are there any roads in the near vacinaty without parking restrictions?.

Well I don't like the idea of paying to park at work either. The problem is that for every car park space there are 2-3 cars trying to park there. The old\current system where everyone gets a permit who asks for one has now become unsustainable.

The university have therefore decided to grade each member of staff based on a range of criteria. The staff with the most points will get a car-park permit, while the staff with the fewest points won't. Those that get a permit will then be further marked based on their salary, distance to work, co2 emissions of the car etc. This will then determine how much the member of staff pays. We have been told that the permit costs will go be going up even more over the next couple of years as well.

Of course the whole thing is a money-making scheme but the "green" co2 rating has been added because of pressure from the government apparently.

BTW there is nowhere to park for free in the city center, you have to pay to go on the road or car park. But isn't this the same for nearly all city center parking nowadays?

Distance plays a part on whether you get a permit or not but plays no part on the CO2 side of things.

Mark it wouldn't surprise me if your uni had a similar scheme within the next couple of years by the sound of things.

Out of interest, what do they do if your car was registered prior to March 2001 and thus has no official CO2 figure?

I don't know for sure but I think if any staff have cars over 10 years old they would charge them the top level of CO2 in that case.
