I've had the same situation this morning, put in an offer for a house only to be informed that someone else has also put in an offer this morning. Apparently the offer's are "close" so the EA has asked for a best and final offer.

I can't help thinking that I'm being done over, surely the better offer should win in this situation.

We've upped our offer, but the more I think about it, the more I'm put off.
Happens all the time, no offers for months and then two within a couple of hours. We had same so we said the other people could have it. Still for sale, not SSTC ... last october.

If there are two offers the best is not necessarily the highest. But it does sound like you are being played as the EA sees this as a must have house (on your part).

If you increase your offer the other party could/will as well, there is no final and best offer ...unless yuo are the only bidder.
