credit card terminals

have a question regarding credit card terminals.
I run a small business which has the use of credit card terminal which I use very rarely but still need to keep in the business when it is needed.

Regardless I still end up paying £40.00 a month just for the rental of the facility and for the streamline service.

Do you know of any business out there offering more competative deals for low usage?

Perhaps might be worth asking on this section of the board Small Biz & Charity Organisers MoneySaving to see if anyone has had a similar problem or can suggest alternatives?

Sorry I can't help you but it is interesting that when, on these forums, I stood up for the continuation of the cheque guarantee service because of their usefulness to small business, market and craft stall holders etc, some people said it wouldn't cost very much for a card terminal. Now we know it's nearly £500 a year

  • Barclaycard offer a PDQ terminal for around £20 a month - £40 seems high!

Our PDQ terminal is £20 per month, but then there is a minimum transaction fee of £20 - so if your card transaction fees don't come to £20, then you pay it. If you only have £10 worth of card transaction fees, then they are topped up to the minimum.

This is annoying for us, as our PDQ machine is occasionally useful, but we primarily use an internet merchant account. In fact, I think the PDQ machine is in a box somewhere!
  • I know this is easy to say but try where possible to get the maximum use out of it. Surely though, if you are only doing £10's worth of transactions then is it worth even bothering with it in the first place? Can you submit any transactions that would be done on the PDQ machine via a vitural terminal instead?

It is the nickname given to the terminals when they were first introduced, and it stands for "pretty damn quick" which they were compared to other methods of payment (i.e. cheque, bank transfer) back when they were first used.
