Bye, bye OVO

After receiving an email yesterday from OVO advising me that my fixed rate tariff was due to end in June and inviting me to sign up to their new fixed rate tariff, I did the usual price comparisons to check out the competitions prices.

As my biggest gripe with OVO was the way they reviewed your DD payment in a way that meant you were paying way above what you consumed, I decided to look at companies that allowed bill payment without DD on fixed rate tariffs and yes there are plenty available.

I finally opted for the EDF Fixed Saver V2 with no DD and after doing all the sums based on my last years consumption the EDF deal is £5 a year cheaper than OVO's new fixed rate tariff which would have tied me into a DD scheme.

If I'd opted for EDF's DD version of the fixed rate tariff I could have saved £60 over the year but the thought of them doing what OVO is good at (stockpiling my money in their account) was something I didn't want (I like my money in my bank account).

I did ring OVO to suggest they could keep me as a customer on their new fixed tariff if they were happy to fix my DD at a fair sum throughout the year but they didn't want to know.

So it's bye, bye OVO and hello EDF with the future not clouded by the threat of being relieved of large wads of money throughout the year and I save a fiver as well!

Oh and thank you to this website's link to a good price comparison site.

I think it's likely that I will be following you in due course (see my thread elsewhere on this forum about Ovo's "reluctance" to calculate a realistic monthly DD).

Please can you post on the ease, or otherwise, of extracting your money from Ovo's grasp when you have changed supplier?
  • My experience of OVO is they are also unrealistically high with their DDs and refuse to budge. I don't expect to save much but I'll be leaving them.

I wonder if they need the extra cash to survive, and if they don't, will their customers' overpayments be lost with them? The very pleasant but unyielding people answering their phones seem unsurprised with the loss of business.
