Energy Monitors - Eon

I have an Eon energy monitor that I have used for 6 months or more.

I am happy that it provides an fairly accurate of load if I switch something on or off.

This morning, for the first time I switched everything off except fridge & seperate freezer (both inbuilt, couldn't hear/feel any compressor activity), a bedside radio/alarm, the central heating programmer and house alarm.

It was giving a reading of 150w which seems high (if the F/F isn't actually cooling).

Is it likely that this base figure could just be an acceptable zero error on this type of device.:o

It is £120 per year after all.

You should get it to zero. Mine reads 0 even though the device itself it plugged in. Have you turned the central heating off at the switch? The oven? The washing machine? Unplugged all the phone chargers? The internet router? All the things on standby use a little. I have the router, the laptop and the mobile charger all plugged in and working and it reads 0.115 kw. The lowest it read without the laptop on is 0.055 kw.

Also, they are not accurate it seems to overread by about 10% to 20% when compared to the actual meter readings. i.e use about 30 kWh per week but the meter registers about 25 kWh used.

I also have an OWL and that one under reads by quite a lot.

    Thanks.

Apart from the items mentioned, all off. I will have a look again when the house is empty.

The fridge & freezer are hopefully the culprits but the switches aren't that easy to get at.

Not to bothered about the actual consumption as I monitor from the meter weekly.

These things are notoriously inaccurate at low readings.

Have you looked at your meter to see what that is doing when the monitor is reading 150 ?

    Hi grizzly1911

Our monitors are not the last word in accuracy. They are meant to give an indication of usage patterns. they are good as a means of raising awareness about electricity consumption.

As others have said If it's accuracy you're after, I would rely on your meter. This is by far the most precise measure of the amount of electricity you're consuming.

    Yep mine too.

CAN you get your "energy now", to read below 150W?

I have a 6 watt water pump on a timer and I can see when it switches on and off on my monitor.

If I switch everything off it shows 4 watts, which is probably what the monitor uses.

    Though the clock goes slow.
