Leek question - plant straight in ground?

  • Actually, they will get nice and thick, as they will push each other apart.

OP - they probably won't need thinning out if they are in rows - just let them get on with it. Like all leeks, they will start to thicken up over the autumn and you can start harvesting smaller ones in early winter. They will carry on growing all winter and will bolt in about a year's time.

I like this answer the best!

I have 5 rows of little leeks and they are about 1cm apart from each other at the moment. I planned to thin them out gradually so they didn't fight each other for space. I hope this will be ok!

You really don't need to! Just leave them to their own devices and get on with growing other stuff.

I have seen 3ft wide beds, 50ft long; packed full of leeks all grown from seed sown and just left - no thinning required and they all push each other apart as they grow.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
