Hey there all,

I have tried to remedy this myself through endless searches, which led me to this site.

I have three laptops that operate off the cable broadband wireless router.

I just reconnected my desktop using XP sp2 (after office renovation) and now my desktop which is hard wired to my router does confirm connected to the LAN, but I cannot access the web via IE or Firefox?

I relased and renewed IP etc... and I think I have gathered that it has to do with DNS between desktop and Router? I am not sure what all that is...Any assistance would be greatly appreciated...thanx in advance!

Have you tried another cable or port on the router?
  • yup, everything says I am connected via LAN, it is just my computer will not connect via IE or Firefox....from my own research i think it has to do with DNS from the comuter end...

Strangely I had the same kind of problem myself this morning. I don't know whether this will apply to you but disconnected the power to my router, reconnected and waited 3 minutes before doing anything else.

From affected computer, Start > Run > cmd.exe and Ping the local IP address of one of the other computers, e.g. 192.168.0.2.
Secondly, ping to https://www.microsoft.com to test the internet connection.

That should tell you all you need to know.

If pinging doesn't work, then check the TCP/IP settings of all network/wireless adaptors (set to automatic), swap ethernet cables, check for faults in Device Manager, etc. Also log into the router from a working computer and see what local IP address is being assigned to all the computers.

If pinging works, then try checking the VPN and proxy settings of the browsers.
  • Thanx Russ,

Not sure which one did it, but I ws able to connect....Thanx so much for your time!
