I've reformatted my kids pc (with XP Pro) and for some reason the sound won't work.
I have the software on disc, but for some reason it will install on the pc, but it wont be recognised by the sound device. For a while it said the sound device wasnt working properly. Now it says it IS, but theres no driver installed.
I've been in the device manager, it wont let me update the driver (nothing happens when i click it)
ATI HD audio rear output is the device. the software i have on cd for it (and that has always worked when i reformatted in the past) is Realtek HD audio driver. when i try and install it, i get an error (install realtek audio driver failure). I have tried disabling/enabling the device and i have tried everything on the windows troubleshooter.
Yes, the wire is in the right hole (i didnt move it, but i have rechecked) and ive tried installing drivers from the internet, but they dont work either. there are no mute boxes ticked anywhere. It says theres no recording device installed.
PLEASE can anyone help???

https://www.amd.com and get the drivers from there.0

In Device Manager, right-click the sound device and choose Uninstall.
Reboot the laptop and when it's redetected it should ask for the driver. Use the one on the CD that worked before, or the appropriate one on the AMD website that Hammyman gives (though it may not be easy to find the right one there...).0 -
thanks for the replies. The AMD website is confusing. I dug out the amd manuals (its dual core) to find the serial numbers and found a cdrom with an MSI utility on it, which automatically downloads updated drivers etc for the motherboard etc. fingers crossed that works!
fwor, i had already tried to uninstall the sound device but it wouldnt because it said it was needed for boot up.
*just finished updating the drivers with the MSI utility & rebooted & still no soundIf you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all0 -
The ATI HD Audio and your soundcard are two seperate devices, you need to install your system drivers if you want the Realtek soundcard (and everything else you have) to work correctly.Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.0

You can try just to update your windows. Windows should find the drivers automatic.0

This is the key to solving this issue. Have you uninstalled yet?
Realtek codecs won't overwrite, you need to uninstall and reboot before you try to apply new drivers.
but it literally wont uninstall. there are no drivers installed for the sound TO uninstall. i have tried. it says it cannot uninstall the sound device because its needed for boot up
im seriously considering reformatting again and hoping that solves the problem. If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all0 -
