I would start using vegoil, get it for about £1a litre at Costco in the 25 litre drums.

Or go to Uptownoils in SE1, they do Biodiesel for £1:20 a litre, they also sell it at £:90 plus vat @ 5% if you, ahem, buy it for domestic use..............

Even buying it tank by tank you are looking at nearly £0:20 a litre saving.

I was considering running my Mondeo on a 50:50 mix of biodiesel and dinodiesel..

Your car may just need a good service as a mate of mine used to get nearer 50mpg, his was auto, and he did 200k over 4 years, doing Private Hire and Courier work in London.

You use the proper fully synthetic oil don't you, I used to use a SynerD oil in full synthetic, I had the Omega with the same engine.

Try a good service, air filter, fuel filter etc
  • I agree about getting the car checked over, a good dose of Millers or Forte won't hurt over a few tankfulls to help clean the injectors up, however i wouldn't be tempted to go down the comedy fuel route.

If your car is a good one i'd keep it anyway, in the budget you have to spare there will be plenty of ropey stuff.

Not being critical but how fast are driving, if you can keep your car under 70 and accelerate gently and engine brake to slow instead of braking you should be doing better, it's amazing how even the most modern Diesels can really drink fuel once the speed creeps up with acceleration to suit.

As a guide our C2 VTS Diesel will return over 60mpg on a run if you keep it under 70, allow it to run at 80 and that drops to 45/48mpg.

No, my vehicles are 54 and 08 plates. But even older smaller vehicles will be more efficient than that.

Not massively. The OPs biggest problem is 45 minutes sat on the M25.

I was considering filmore's biodiesel (spot the movie reference) but not sure about what is need to convert, and it's only a saving if you get the same mpg. I think the service is a sensible idea all round, and with an mot looming, might be worth getting a mechanical eye passed over it. Don't know any small garages here, but we have one of those formula one places.

And, tbh, I'm not the most conservative driver, but I'm trying.

I've just bought a 2000 X Passat B5 saloon 1.9 TDi SE PD AUTO which is getting 52 to the gallon day to day driving which cost me 1350. High mileage at 185K but FULL VAG history, full MOT and Tax, drives like new, looks like new.... Bobby daxxler!!

I use one the most respected MB specialists in the country, whom i will not name as he hardly needs the advertising, my servicing/repair bills are about a quarter what they would be at the main dealer, and the work is done properly.
