Yes, it was really cool to see the old mechanism and the stones where the wheat is ground. The volunteers (2 pensioners) who were running this particular windmill were really nice and very helpful too.
Unfortunately I won't be passing it in the near future as we were on holiday, but there's one on the other side of the town where we live so I'll be checking it out!

I made bread with plain flour when I was out of bf and it was ok but just ok. Bread needs bread flour thats high in gluten to make a good loaf.

Not sure what everyone else would normally do, but we ran out of bread flour tonight, and as i'm off to the supermarket later, we decided to use Mr T Basic plain flour so we had bread with dinner (hm soup). It needed a bit less water than usual, but we made it as a single knead 2lb loaf (by hand) ................and it was great! The texture was lighter and more like white sandwich bread than we would normally get with the Allinson white Bread Flour, and I'm sure it's about half the price, so that will be my white bread flour of choice from now on! (we normally have alternative days with the bread, brown then white.

Hope this helps someone cutting their bread costs!

  • Hi,

I need your advice ASAP - I have a friend coming for lunch and I thought I'd make bread rolls, but I only have about a cup and a half of bread flour left, but I do have SR and P flour in the cupboard. Is there any chance I can mix and match?

    Thanks

Use your bread flour and make up the quantitity with plain, it should be fine, I find even value plain flour makes okay bread.

    Hi,

Since I'm living on my stores and €5 a week till Christmas, I'm trying to be creative with what I've got.

I don't have any bread flour (which I find quite expensive here in Ireland), just wholemeal and plain flour. The only bread I've ever made is soda bread but I quite fancy having a go at something else. I remember seeing recipes here for things like homemade naans, tortillas and rolls. I love all of these and I was wondering if it's possible to make anything like this using plain flour.

I don't have a breadmaker so I'd be doing it by hand. And I'd better mention that I'm not a very experienced baker and have never used yeast before.:o

Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions.

Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!
