I guess this has been posted before, but i am reminding members about the offer just in case they have missed it,as i understand from a contact in BT that quite a few people still pay BT £5.25p a quarter (£21 a year) for the service.
How do you get it, register for BT privacy. by dialling 0800 916 5544 (available 24 hours a day).

"BT Privacy helps stops unwanted sales calls by registerring you with the Telephone Preference Service and giving you BT Caller Display at no extra charge.
From 1st October 2006 customers who do not make some chargeable calls with BT will be charged for BT Caller Display.
Customers with other call providers can still benefit from BT Caller Display at no extra cost, if the following calls are made. Customers who bill monthly must make at least two chargeable calls with BT in that month, otherwise BT reserves the right to charge £1.75 a month for BT Caller Display. Customers who bill every three months must make at least six chargeable calls within those three months, otherwise BT reserves the right to charge £5.25 a quarter. "

Thanks so much for this dognboneman, this is brilliant. Can't believe that it's been possible to get caller display for free and I've been paying for it!
Phoned the number, is an automated line and very easy to set up. The caller display automatically becomes free.0 -
It's not really free as you have to make 6 calls in 3 months, but still sweet I guess.

Thanks for this, I too am annoyed that i've been paying for it all this time!0

Thanks for this, I've had a phone with a display panel for a while and have spent many hours trying to figure out why numbers don't appear when someone rings... Will hopefully save numerous arguments with the bf over who should answer the phone as we don't know whose mother it is! :j
New flat, new budget, new commitment to MSE!

Sorry but can someone please explain how you can make a chargable call with BT when you pay another provider for your calls? I still have line rental with BT and pay for caller display however my calls are provided by Talk Talk.:j0

I'm sure it must have its uses, but I've never quite figured out why I would want caller display. When I answer the phone, the first thing the caller normally does is tell me who they are!Stompa0

Prefix the number you are dialing with 1280 and that will route (and charge) it via BT rather than your CPS carrier.Oscar wrote:Sorry but can someone please explain how you can make a chargable call with BT when you pay another provider for your calls? A BT customer only (line and calls with BT), has to make some chargeable calls, so one call would suffice.
Its only customers who have their line with BT and have cps their calls to another supplier that need to place at least 6 calls in three months through BT. Two evening calls a month at 5.5p a time ,11p a month will suffice.
The BT 1280 facility can prove very useful to people who have moved their calls from BT, but still keep their line rental with them.
(A) If BT are cheaper then your call supplier for a certain type of call eg non geographical, then you can get the lower BT rate by using 1280.
(B) If your call suppliers network crashes,or you get barred, you can still use BT for your calls.0
