Suspicion says that these schemes aren't strictly about re-cycling. They are about stimulating the sale of new consumer goods.

Recycling is a bit of a misnomer. The objective of the schemes is to contract the supply of secondhand products that are knocking about the economy.

Often these older products end up being passed down to youngsters, or given away free to friends.

Industry research has no doubt found that this practice of providing hand-me-downs in consumer electronics has a deleterious effect on the sale of new consumer goods.

And all these "recycling schemes" have been started to put a stop to that!

I hope its just me, but I dont think I will be traiding in a working Nintendo DS Lite or 4th Gen Ipod Nano for £6.01 - I'll stick them on Ebay for for the more realistic £50!
