Mental health conditions are covered under the Disability Discrimation Act (as far as i'm aware). Under this the employer has to make reasonable adjustments, which the guidance states includes things like time off to attend medical appointments that can't reasonably be taken outside of work such as GP appointments. I'd maybe spend time reading around this act and reasonable adjustments, and perhaps consider legal advice, or calling ACAS

No they are not. Because (a) the Disability Discrimination Act was repealed when the Equality Act came into force and (b) with very few exceptions (mental health not being one of them) no condition is automatically covered from day one. The relevant determining factor is the impact that the condition has on normal day-to-day activities combined with the length that a condition has lasted or, in some cases were future prognosis is clear, is likely to last.

And guidance is guidance - not law. If the Equlaity Act applies, and that is by no means certain since the condition appears to date from february according to the OP, that does not mean that time off for medical appointments is a reasonable adjustment.

Which is why we asked for the rest of the story - because there is obviously more going on here - in order to give informed advice.

I'm only basing that on my personal experience of having a long standing, chronic condition that has been covered by the original DDA, and subsequent equality act, within my place of work-which meant work did have to allow time off to attend appointments in connection with this as a reasonable adjustment. Anyway this isn't about my situation, I hope you find the support that's useful to you

Meant to post this http://www.mind.org.uk/help/rights_and_legislation/disability_discrimination_under_the_equality_act_2010 for the OP - if it's useful then great, if not then no harm done by sharing it.

My partner had a breakdown in Feb of this year

    Was this breakdown, work related?
