Alternative to Just Giving that raises funds for CIC's?

Options
I am a director of a Community Interest Company - an ambulance service for mental health emergencies, and have been using social media as a form of awareness and fund-raising, however, myself and a few others have started to partake in runs - 10K's, marathons and half-marathons to raise more money for PRIME (my CIC).

The real problem we have with the fundraising side here is that running obviously encourages people to donate, but to encourage donations far and wide, facebook and twitter linked with justgiving works a treat but I can't register my CIC with justgiving as it is not a registered charity.

Does anyone know of a justgiving alternative that allows CIC's to register or do we have to become a registered charity?

  • You probably have to register yourself as a charity. Or you could just do fundraising events and advertise on your fb and twitter pages.

You could try working through all the suggestions in this article, but I suspect you'll have to be registered as a charity. Having said that, I don't know much about CICs, so it could also be worth checking with HMRC to see if you can reclaim gift aid: if you can, there's less reason for charity giving sites to not register you.

I have recently being going through the process with my own small charity - you can't register as a charity until your income is £5,000 a year or more. However, you can register as a "Charity for Tax Purposes", you will need 3 responsible people, probably a bank account and a constitution etc.

This page may be of interest: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/charities/tax/recognition.htm

Once you're registered, you have "Charitable Status" however, I don't know if this would be enough for Just Giving.

Once you are over £5,000 a year income, I think you have to register as a charity.

    Very helpful Sayaka.

I suspect the sticking point MAY be in the difference between being a 'registered charity' according to the Charity Commission, and 'registered as a charity for tax purposes' with HMRC.

You can search the CC's website for all registered charities, I'm not so sure that you can search the HMRC website for all groups 'registered as a charity for tax purposes'.

However you do in both cases get a reference number! IF JustGiving etc can accept the HMRC reference as a means of validating your charity status, then that's great. If they can't, I guess it will be because they can't easily / independently verify that you are in fact properly registered.

Just Giving is a For Profit organisation, so they take a 5% cut! I think Virgin Money Giving doesn't take a cut so maybe consider them.

Hi, we are with https://www.everyclick.com They don't take a 5% cut like justgiving on donations although they take a very small one off sponsorship ones, they also don't charge to join like Justgiving do. I'm not 100% of the timings but I think we joined Everyclick before our reg charity number came through, i'm not sure if its because they except non profit orgs or because we were able to say our charity no was on the way

You can actually register to raise money on behalf of a charity can you not?
