Npower Wrong Meter Reading
Hi everyone
Just moved out of my property so i contacted Npower to tell them thus. Now back in january i was £148.82 in credit so i contacted them with a accurate Meter reading and to my shock they send me a letter demanding more than £480.00 for 4 months worth of energy (Bare in mind i have only Electricity and don't use the heating in winter) in 7 days or else so i contacted them asking what the hell is going on and after months of arguing yesterday they admitted the street canvesser back in August Estimated my Meter reading.
So i figure he must of underestimated the Reading i have the start up reading in my Tenancy agreement now is there something i can do to pursue in getting my money back for being over charged a rediculous sum of money for just 2 people living at the property?

So back in January you received a bill with an estimated meter reading.
You could have checked the meter reading yourself and if the estimate was wide of the mark you could have phoned in a customer reading.
The fact is, you have the meter reading on the day you moved in and you gave them the meter reading on the day you moved out so the difference is the number of units of electricity you have used. That is what you are being charged for.
So, if the start and end meter readings are correct, it is irrelevant what the estimated reading was back in January. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
as above, if your start meter reading is correct and the final reading is correct then the bill will need to be paid as you have used that amount of electric.
If you cant pay the bill in full you may want to discuss a payment arrangement with Npower to spread the balance over 3 months for example0 -
no what i mean is when the canvesser stopped me to set up Npower in august they didn't ask for a meter reading stupid of me to forget so i called up to give a meter reading in Jan only for them to charge me as above.
They told me on the phone they estimated my start meter what i am saying is if i give them the correct start reading will they re-imburse me for all this agro?0 -
What is the estimated reading they used in August'10 and what is the reading recorded by your landlord when you moved in in August'10?
Bear in mind that if they reduce you bill because the actual move in reading is higher than the estimate used, then someone else (LL) will be getting a bill for the difference so they may argue the reading is incorrect.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Did you change your supplier to Npower in August and they estimated the opening change of supply reading and had you previously been paying another supplier?
If so the meter reading the previous supplier finalised your account to will be the same as the opening meter readings Npower have used.
If you have the correct meter reading for the date of the transfer then as long as the difference between your reading and the estimate reading is greater than 250 units Npower can raise an agreed read dispute to change the read,
If the difference is lower than 250 the reading will have to stay the same.0
