Permitted Work and Incapacity Benefit

Since January I've been doing Permitted Work, whick lets me earn up to £81 per week, and work up to 16 hours a week, doing PC repairs while claming Incapacity Benefit. Trouble is, the Permitted Work period ends in January, I can only do this for a year. It is possible to do Supported Permitted Work for a longer period, however I'd need to be supervised by an organisation such as a voluntary group or the local authority. I just phoned the DWP, who didn't really seem to know much more than the DWP's website, they couldn't tell me who to speak to in the council, or which volunatry groups I could try. The CAB tried harder to help, but they couldn't find anyone in the council, or any voluntary group who can supervise me either. After January of next year I'm restricted to earning £20/week. If I go off IB, I won't be able to claim any other benefit if my health worsens again, as I have savings and insufficient NI contributions.

Does anyone know of any voluntary groups who I could work with, or have any other good ideas?

If you do try work and need to claim again you can go back on to IB at the rate you were on before if your health worsens as long as it is within 2 years.

    Hi Strike_Team,

Who did you speak to at the DWP as that might have a bearing on what you were told? If it wasn't a Disability Employment Advisor then I would suggest that you phone your local Jobcentre and ask to make an appointment with the DEA. They should be able to tell you who supervises Supported Permitted Work in your area. :)

If you've already spoken to the DEA, you could, if you want to, PM me to tell me what your disability or health problem is, and also the area in which you live, I'll see if I can find an organisation that might be able to help.

  • Thanks. I'll give the Job Centre a phone.
