I think being for the bank a little bit longer helps, like 6-12 months.

I would go into branch and see what cards are on offer. If you have any cards on offer (anything from Initial to Platinum. pre-approved - high chance of acceptance usually), go for it. You will have an instant decision (if accepted, a credit limit will be given at the same time), and sign paperwork. If you don't want the card offered, and want Initial, say that to them.

Applying online will slow things down, as there won't be any instant decision.
many thanks book 12 i'm probably guilty of trying to build up credit rating too fast (ONLY VANQUIS AT PRESENT) funnily enough i'm going into branch thur you've certainly prompted me to at the very least ask the question thanks again

hi book12 went into branch thur and asked if any pre-approved offers and nothing on screen realised only been with barclays 11 weeks, so not even 3 months it was suggested that 6 months is the normal time frame for the realistic possibility of an offer to show so with zx81's comments regarding i should be higher than 70/80% for an initial (soft search) it all points to leaving things for another 3 months glad i read this post as i was almost certainly going to try end may but had zero knowledge of asking in branch about pre-approved offers, thanks once again zx81 and book12 as without your comments i may well have been declined and then was looking at least another 6 months to re-apply.

According to some people on here https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2172875 , they need to wait for more than 6 months.

    Hi,
I've just done this pre-apply soft search and it says that I'm at 80-90% of getting barclaycard initial! Shocking! I thought it would be much, much lower as I'm self-employed and my income is low. I will probably give it a try. If they decline, I will apply for vanquis. What documents are required? I mean what should I send in case of being accepted? ths
  • hey pearls, I was wondering how do you know the percentage of acceptance on ur barclays initial?

I do have a barclays account (current account plus, ISAs, savings etc) but I cannot find anywhere such an information!

In section Personal on Barclays website choose Credits Cards and then choose 'I'm interested in: Applying with confidence'. Answer the questions and you will get your results in seconds :)

just out of interest if you don't mind me asking Anya 15, 1.what's your income you say it is low, mine's just under £30k self employed . 2.how long have you been with barclays ? myself 11 weeks 3.how long current house ? myself 1 year (previous 7 years) it would be interesting to see how answers compare as you have been quoted a higher chance of approval i have asked you these questions as i strongly suspect you're answers are more favourable and this is where i'm falling short at present many thanks

    hi Pearls of wisdom,
    1) I meant a very low income: about £7500-8000 a year. I only work part-time and I'm a part-time student. 2)I have been with Barclays since February last year. They have already sent me their Initial offer twice: last November and April this year. Don't know whether it matters but I don't even have a business account, they agreed to open a current account for me and I pay in all the money I earn every week. I have a small overdraft of £100 but have never used it. 3) I have been living in my current flat (well, it's not mine, I'm renting it) for more than two years. As I already said, I'm very surprised than they even bother with sending me their offers and even more surprised with the result of pre-application check. It's all a completely new world for me because I've never had a credit card although I'm 30 (this is partly because of my brother's huge debt that I'm scared of credits).
    Best regards,
And sorry for my grammar (I'm not British).
