Take the points or do the workshop

Hello,

After 30 years clean licence I have been caught doing 35 in a 30 zone :o

I have been offered £80 fine and speed awareness workshop or 3 points and £60 pound fine.

Which do I take ??

I seem to remember that our insurance was no more last year when I entered my husband's points into the quotation??

Also does anyone know if they do the workshop at the weekend as I would have to take a day off unpaid if it was in the week.

I would appreciate any feedback,
Many thanks
Tracey

I can't ever imagine willingly taking points instead of a course, even if the course were 2 days and £500!

The way I look at it is 3 points is 25% of the way to a ban. now imagine one day they park one of those camera vans in a really sneaky place (and they do!) where you feel its safe to speed up a bit. You may go past it on your way and on your way back and pick up 6 points, so now your on 9 - only one slip up from a ban for the next 3 years instead of having a safety margin.

I know the holy brigade who have never had a point since getting let off by Julius Caesar will be quick to advise its your own fault for not being perfect, but for the rest of us mere fallible mortals 3 points can easily come your way if you get a bad mood copper and a debatable worn tyre.

You don't want 3 points on your licence. Although some insurers won't load a premium with just three points, they all will at 6 points, which is quite close if you already have 3 for the (5?) years that they remain unspent and you have to declare them.

Do the course. The one I took was informative (Wiltshire). Never think you can't learn something.

They usually run in the week. You have quite a long lead time to the course. You should be able to take a day's holiday to do it.

My daughter (driving for several years) took the course and actually enjoyed it.

She was reluctant to go on it but then reckoned that she learned a lot from it and it started her taking a pride in her driving too.

    Much better than three points......

Looks like I'll be doing the course!!! Didn't even occur to me how easy it would be to acquire more points.

If it's a long lead I might be able to do it during summer holidays as I'm not allowed to take paid holiday during term time.

    Thanks for the feedback.
