Do scottish power send people out to check supply number or meter serial numbers even if you are not scotish power customer?
i had a guy at my door today saying he is from company who produces electricity/gas (didnt say scotish power) and it was his responsiblity to check supply number becasue other company's use assumption or whatever along with those lines(he totally lost me there) and wanted to see my bill.

i told him i use online billing so cant show him the bill. he than asked me if i got my current tariff details from money saving website. and i then realised he read that notice on my door which i printed off from this website which says "No cold callers" and so on. and thats why is is not saying who he is.

So i asked him to show me id. which he did and it said scottish power on it. i asked him why it says scottish power? his reply was becasue its scottish power who produce/create/ supply to your home(cant remeber what word he used, but it was one of above) and EON just bill me.they do not themselves do anything. than he left after i told him i cant show him the bills.

now i think he was just a door to door salesman. and just wanted me to switch to them. otherwise he had no reasons to ask me about my current tariff details and who i was with.

my question is was he telling the truth? or did he make up a story after seeing no cold callers sign.

and bytheway he showed me some paper which was laminated. looked like it was taken out from some newspaper or maybe he wrote that himself how comparison sites are misleading peoples. but i didnt read it

Sounds like a cold caller to me....Why not phone your supplier and ask them?

It was definetly a door to door salesman, and its not the 1st time iv heard of these tactics being used. Best move is to contact your supplier to make sure you havent been switched without authorisation. If u havent, forget about it.

This has happened to me in the past and I believe it is a scam.

The person who called is trying to get your meter number, plus your name - that's why he asks for your bill. If he can get the meter number only, he can get your name from the electoral register if necessary.

He then fills in a change of supplier application from your existing supplier to whoever he is finally passing your details onto. You know nothing of this for several weeks, because it takes that time to progress a change-over by which time he has had his fast-buck commission.

I assume he makes up your bank account details if he needs to or maybe he asks for those too if the interview goes well.

I did not give him any details but realised that whoever legitimately needed my meter number would be able to obtain it more easily and profitably by asking my existing supplier directly, not send a man in a smart suit and posh car round the streets.

Same thing seems to go on with telephone/broadband accounts. Several times I have had supposedly TalkTalk people knocking my door for details when I am already with them! My neighbour found that his telephone account had been moved from BT to another company without his knowledge - he only found out when he received his first bill from the new company. He did remember talking to a cold caller who said they were from TalkTalk, but that was not the company that he was transferred to.

David39 Hit the nail on the head. Id still phone my supplier as they do not need bank details to set you up on a quarterly basis or if you pay through pre-payment meters.

    Hi afzaal1988,

Unfortunately, what you have said it does sound like a cold caller, I can double check if we had an agent in your area and have this investigated for you, I will also make sure that an application has not been submitted to change your supply.

If you want me to help drop me an email to onlinecomplaints@scottishpower.com with your details and I will see what we can do.

    Kind regards
