Best place to bulk buy basics?

Hello :-)
Well I have some hard work ahead, I lost my job at the weekend  So its time to tighten the belt a bit more and plan. I have been looking at what we eat usually and I think with the last months wages I have it would be prudent to bulk buy things like pasta rice flour etc. Where do all of you old style experts go to do this?
Thanks in advance
Naomi :T

alot of here recommend lidl for flour but mine never has the cheap stuff in, theres nothing wrong with value flour tho, and tesco and asda havebread flour for around 70p last time i checked, value pasta is acually quite nice at 18p a bag, value rice isn't bad aswell aslong as you give it a good wash before cooking, it also might be worth checking sites like aproved foods and stocking up on things like beans and tomatoes

For flour I buy value, I don't have any problems with it and thinks it works just as well as more expensive brands of flour.

For pasta, I know some people don't like it but currently the major contenders have (500g I believe possibly 1KG) for just 9p a bag, I find half a bag does 2 meals for me and my son, so for a family of 4 half a bag, just 4.5p, if you added veg in it makes it go further.

Rice I don;t use much of but again value bags I use.

I use egg noodles for stir frys etc but it can get quite costly but using the value noodles without the flavour sachet saves money.

I agree with above for checking approved foods, even just for some treats I recently got 24 bags of smoothie bites for £1.50, great for lunch boxes ort a snack and they have one of the 5 a day, they also had 4 packs of Foxes cream biscuits 4 for £1, they cost almost 89p each in the supermarkets.

Buy in the value jellies, these make a great snack, pudding or to add into trifle etc. Add fruit and you'll get more out of them as well.

i think sainsburys value range is the best tasting of all the supermarkets cheap ranges

I buy quite a bit of this stuff now and have never had anything that I have hated, the only thing I dont buy cheap is tins of beans as branston ones are my favourite.

the curry sauce is 9p a jar and is a favourite in my house as apparently it tastes like the ones you get at the chip shop and makes a really cheap meal.

also look out for the weekend specials at Lidl as they usually have one type of fresh meat for half price.

I dont make my own bread but use the cheapest flour for baking and have never had any problem with it, cant tell the difference to be honest.

    Hi
You can get 5 x 1kg bags of pasta flour (organic) for £6.50 on dove foods website, now and again we will make loads of tagliatelle by hand and dry it on the line - we just cling film around the wires first

you can experiment with all types of shapes, it takes less time to cook so saves money on cooking - energy - and you can use up all sorts of thinks in fillings in a canelloni or ravioli, we like roast veg blended with soft cheese.

I also buy all my flour from dove - just think its good quality and you can buy up to 25kg bags

Interesting - do you think "cheap" supliers only make things just for Sainsburys?

Don't use L as we don't have one close enough.

Do use Al a lot as it is our closest family supermarket otherwise it is Waitrose:eek:. All the rest are 6/7 miles away.

There stuff is pretty good IMO on the whole. Mornflake make a lot if not all their cereals (round by us at least - hence my question above as they also supply into the big ones as well). I find their cheaper bread better, than other cheapies, too but I guess that may well be regional.

My OH was brought up on brands but no problems. Used to be Heinz beans but OK with Al - doesn't like HP though;)

IIMO a lot of the value ranges are cross supplied.

If you are near a Wing Yip, they are great for rice. I buy 10kg at a time. WY and other Chinese/Asian super markets are great if you eat a lots of that type of food, which we do

If you have the space and transport - sack of 25kg potatoes, when in season, £4-5 by us market or farms.

Kept well they will last several weeks and great for growing families.
