u should let the battery die - discharge - say, once/twice a week / otherwise, u will have a permanent dead battery double-quick/ so, every so often, unplug from mains and let the battery discharge ./

Older laptops suffered from this more than modern ones. If its an Apple laptop you dont need to worry about it, they have decent battery management. In general, don't worry about it, just give the battery some exercise once a week, unplug it and let it do a cycle

To answer your original question, I suggest leaving the battery connected. If your power cable became disconnected, or accidentally switched off, it could cause some damage to your laptop.

I would not personally recommend flattening the battery on a regular basis, as that would be more likely to kill the battery much much faster than leaving it in whilst on AC.

Perhaps now and again, once every few months or so, let it die and then let it charge up with the laptop turned off, but I just leave mine in permanently and dont have any problems even though the laptop is a few years old now.

I would also leave the battery in all the time, for the reasons already stated, it stops sudden power loss in the event the lead is unplugged accidently, or in the event of a power cut.

By the time the battery is going to fail anyway, assuming your battery is not a lemon, then replacement batteries will be much cheaper on ebay or other sites.
