Sorry, I've just re-read your first post, and I've also remembered an incident which occurred a while ago, where the note were mutilated - torn into 2 pieces in my situation. I did end up exchanging it and sending it off to the BoE.

As long as the full serials were clearly visible it should have been fine and it could have been exchanged at first point of contact. If not, then they can still send them off, or alternatively I've managed to find this http://www.bankofengland.co.uk/banknotes/damaged_banknotes.htm should this kind of thing happen again :P
Anything that I do say, is strictly my opinion :p

I know from experience (relative works there and I used to) that my local LTSB will quite happily exchange notes for customers - each till used to have a small bundle of damaged notes that we'd taken out of circulation, once every couple of weeks on a quiet day we'd take time to sort and bundle them all up properly and send them back to BoE who'd then reimburse LTSB. It's surprising how many dodgy notes there are out there!

I find it very strange that neither bank would exchange this note - we would usually exchange poor notes withdrawn from our ATMs as long as they passed the standard tests to prove they were genuine, but don't think we were obliged to do this if person wasn't a LTSB customer unless they had a receipt to show it came from our machine.

  • And another update...
Went to Lloyds branch and asked to see the person named in the reply they sent me (email they sent asked to speak to a specific person and they would exchange the note). I was told that person could be found in another branch near by. There are two branches very very close to each other, so, hm, strange, as I put the correct one in the email, but ok, it's like 1-2 min away anyway. So, another branch. Spoke to a person at the desk, as soon as I mentioned the damaged note and ATM, I was told they cannot possibly exchange the note and it's really not going to work. And it is certainly RBS that should do it. (I think they said something like 'I don't understand why your bank is being so ridiculous').
Yeah, that was all. I guess I could have stayed and insisted on seeing that specific person, but fighting over that point just seemed a bit scary, I am a bit anxious about social situations anyway, so all that stress over 10£ just doesn't seem to be worth it.

It's fair enough if they only do it for their costumers, though. They did not ask me whether I had ATM receipt however. Not that it would prove much anyway..

I am going to see what RBS reply is going to be....(just waiting for that letter, as they don't do email replies to complaints)

I think that note will be going to self-service machine somewhere, that seemed like the best idea so far. If it went through ATM, these machines should accept it as well... Trying at just any shop isn't a bad idea, but now it has been refused once, so I know it's likely to be refused again... :o

I still want to know what is the right thing the banks should do, and what RBS is going to say about it, as in, who is responsible for exchanging these :)

I found that website as well, it's just... Royal Mail do lose letters sometimes, even if it's not often, so I am a bit unsure about sending it via regular mail.. And Special Delivery is just not worth it for 10£.

Why not just go to any bank that you have not yet visited, get out £10 and get a receipt, and then go straight inside with your damaged note for a replacement?

May be very slightly underhand but these banks are just acting like complete a**eholes as they return old notes all the time so it is no skin off their nose to add yours to the pile.

A couple of months ago I accidentally ripped a £20 note into 3 bits. I took it into a Post Office and the lady exchanged it.

Petty little jobsworths making it up as they go along. If you don't want to get rid of it by other means, simply send it to the Bank of England and they will exchange it.

This intrigues me. How do you fold a note so that one rip will render it in three pieces? The only way I can think of ripping a note to leave three pieces would involve two rips - and that would be weird if it were an accident... (Oops, I've ripped a note. Oh no! I've ripped it again!)... any origami fans out there who can answer my question?

Fold it once and rip it = 3 pieces!
