He has already paid more than 3/4's of this debt...
In that case maybe he should stand firm on not paying any more and see what action the FIL takes, if any.I still do not think that he should pay anymore money and should tell the F-I-L to go seek the money elsewhere, namely the daughter and be lucky that he has paid all what he has paid.
Always better (IMO) to communicate these intentions in a reasonable manner, rather than ranting, as if he rants about others being unreasonable he runs the risk that it is he who will come out sounding like the unreasonable one.0
