I have just received 3 books by John Harrison `low cost living` `easy jams chutneys and preserves` and `how to store your home grown produce`. They look excellent and I am bound to glean a lot more tips. I am also waiting for a couple of 1p books from amazon. Nice excuse to put my feet up0

I had a lovely moment yesterday. There is a cake shop I have been past loads of times but never bought anything, but yesterday I thought I'd get some as a treat for the kids. I went in about 1/2 hr before closing and was asking what each was, trying to decide before picking 3 slices and the guy said "I'll give you some others free to try" and put 7 slices in a box!! The kids were delighted - and yes I did pinch one too0

Hope that I am not repeating info as I haven't read all of the threads.
Anyone with a nearby Lidl will find packs of 3 peppers, 1green, 1 red, and 1 orange on offer for a £1. The peppers are a good size and good to use fresh or diced for freezing0 -
I am fed up with MrT putting up prices. It's hard when you buy basics and then even they creep up. I used to treat me and the boys to own brand fig rolls which I thought were cheap at 35p then they go and up the price to 44p - that's a 30% increase! And I've noticed that their own brand sultanas have gone up from 63p to 99p - what's that all about? I use this kind of staple for cakes/breakfast/biscuits etc and it's a pain when you're having to add another 30% for nothing!! I must say though that their own brand passata (seived tomatoes) at 29p for 500g is excellent and are fabulous for the lasagne/bolognaise sauces. It's also rich so can be watered down and my boys prefer it to tins of tomatoes because there are no lumps!0

Or when you had to wait for ages to be able to get a phone installed.
Then, for years we used to answer the phone by saying your telephone number.0 -
Some fantastic advise on here, makes me want to get my bum into gear and get our 80ft long garden cleared out to make way for veg and (pleeeeeeeeeease hubbie!!) some chickens :T
And how do you find these 1p books on amazon??
xxCan't think of anything smart to put here...0 -
You think of a topic or some words to describe the book you might want and you use their search facility and then keep an eye on the used book prices, it is up underneath the titles0

Sheer luck is the answer to finding those 1p books if one is after a specific book. There arent (or at least I havent found....) a list of 1p books. Its just a question of looking up the book one wants to order it - and then sometimes (by luck) finding its possible to get a 2ndhand copy for 1p (plus postage BTW - which is another coupla £ on top of ANY price basically).
its very much luck of the draw. Tends to happen with cheaper older books that they have a fair few copies of. On the other hand - I've sometimes looked up an old out of date book I wanted and thought "How much?" as the fact that its not currently in print and that there are only a couple of copies available means the current owners have thought "Bingo:T:D - I'll charge loads for it" and they do and one finds a perfectly ordinary book that would cost £10/£12 if only the publisher would reprint it is being marketed for £30/£40/I've even seen ones over £100:eek:
Some of it does boil down to having the knack for spotting a book that isnt wanted currently JUST before many other peeps want it - and getting it at the "unwanted" stage. Hence I personally "ran my way" very fast through buying up a copy each of every book that was currently unpopular that I wanted and I thought would soon become popular - and bought a copy each as soon as I spotted them....(having just found Amazon was the fastest way I know to up the number of bookshelves I needed by 6 more.......whoops...but thankfully I think I have every single book I could ever need now...).

As for your 80' garden - wheres a "green with envy" smilie when needed...:rotfl:0
