in Credit cards
Hi There,
I hope someone can help me.
I very kindly have been making a monthly payment on my barclaycard for a subscription for my partner. The subscription is in his name but I make the payments.
The problem I have now is that he is my ex partner!! Barclaycard says I need to contact the merchant and the merchant says I cannot cancel it because its not in my name.
He will not cancel it so therefore I am stuck paying it. Is there any advise on how I can get this stopped??
Many thanks in advance

Tell your ex partner to cancel it?
What sort of subscription is it? How do you need to cancel the subscription (ie phone, email, account log in etc)?0 -
Would it work if you 'lost' your card, you would be supplied with a new one with a different number.
Not sure really.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Assuming it's a CPA, then that probably woudn't work.0

Quite right - it wouldn't work.
You need to get your ex to cancel the service or face going down the small claims route to get your money back.0 -
Reporting it lost MIGHT work (depends on the arrangement that the merchant has) but it might not. But I certainly wouldn't do it - if you have further problems down the line it won't help your case that you lied.
Tell the merchant that it is your card and that they are no longer authorised to debit the card. Ideally in writing, keep a copy and send recorded delivery. Only you can authorise use of the card - albeit this was originally done by your partner acting on your behalf. You are now entitled to tell them to stop, regardless of what they tell you and regardless of whether your partner receives an ongoing supply from them.
If your (ex)partner did contract in his name, then he may still have an ongoing liability to the merchant. This is between the merchant and your ex and is a separate issue. The merchant can't hide behind this as an excuse to keep debiting your card.
Don't keep arguing with the merchant. Having told them they are no longer authorised to debit your card, if they continue then you can dispute with the CC. This shouldn't be a problem if you can supply a copy of your letter plus a note of the conversation(s) you have already had. If the CC says anything about going back to the merchant again, then it's written complaint to the CC and escalate to FOS if necessary - though I really doubt it will be necessary.

Chargeback? It might not stop them from trying to take any further money in the future but gives them an idea you don't want this any more.
You might have agreed to it at the time, but of course now being an x I wouldn't want to be paying for it anymore either.David
