  • A man shot his wife and child the day after Boxing day year before last and the house is 5 doors down from us. It hasn't made any difference at all. He was also mentally ill (we think) and it was a terrible tragedy.

I was reading a website the other day that had 'ten things that can devalue your house', and a house with a history was amongst them, but they mentioned as an example the house belonging to Fred West (it's been knocked down now). I don't think in your case it would make a big difference, there's always going to be someone who want buy a property for some reason, maybe 'cos the neighbours are black; or they have a cat; or even they're Man Utd supporters.
If the guy has gone to jail i'm sure it's common knowledge amongst his associates, i doubt they'd come to the house now he's gone.

Interesting thread. I agree that this sad history should not deter you from buying, though.

I have come across people before now who've sworn blind they would not live in a house where anyone had died (peacefully or otherwise), but that must limit them to newbuild, just about! Someone has died in most houses, at some point. I appreciate that tragic/violent deaths may change things a little even for buyers who didn't know the people involved.

Our house is built on a mediaeval plague burial ground (we discovered this after we bought it!) It was also the local 'HQ' for the Temperance (anti-alcohol) Society in Victorian times, who would turn in their graves if they could see the amount consumed under this roof some Friday evenings after a hard day at the chalk face...

We also learned that the previous owners had been given the house (a stone-built Dales cottage) as a wedding present in 1920 (when it cost £100) and went on to have 8 children, all born in the house. The walls were very messy.

I'd like a house with a bit of history; all I've got is a falling down conservatory/glass house...
