Hi all, hoping somebody can help me.
I have been playing guitar for several years and would class myself as an intermediate player, however, I haven't a clue about all the technical stuff that comes to boot.
I own an Epiphone SG G-400 and along with it I use a Zoom G2Nu effects pedal. The only missing piece to my setup is a decent amp. The one I own at the minute is a Kay Sound Fashion 50L Solid State Amplifier, a hand me down no doubt older than me.
I play a huge variety of stuff, mostly bands like guns n roses, iron maiden, whitesnake, and a lot of acoustic stuff too... For home use only.
Can somebody point me in the direction of a suitable amp? No more than £150...

TBH for £150 you wouldnt get much at new prices.
Do you want to gig? Or is this a practice amp for home use? Are you in a band? If not do you want to be?
Because the answers to these questions depend a lot on what sort of amp you may consider.
e.g. if you want to gig and/or are in a band you'll need something loud (stand next to a drummer going for it and you'll know why)
You currently have a solid state amp, but consider valve or hybrid valve/tranny I would expect someone playing whitesnake, iron maiden etc to go for a valve amp because of the warmer heavier sound.
If it were me, Id be looking at Vox, Laney and Marshall 30w amps for practice usually a 10" speaker, And for pub gigs something bigger; 30-50w 12" speaker.
Other things to consider are having your effects pedals in-line or in an effects loop and whther you want an output for PA's etc0 -
All I can suggest is a trip to your local music shop and try them out until you find one that you like.
No-one can tell via a web forum what sound you want to get, and what volume you want to play it at.
For home use, anything up to around 25w I would guess would be more than adequate, but only you can tell that for sure.0 -

It is only for home use and I do not intend to join any band.
I've been looking at the Fender Mustang. Is this the sort of amp I will need for 'rich warm tones'?
Like I said, I haven't got a clue..
Thanks for helping.0 -
Like I said, no-one can tell from what you say whether or not a particular amp will deliver what you regard as 'rich, warm tones'
Go into a music shop and test-drive some until you find one you like.0 -
I agree with googler, ultimatley you should take your axe and pedals down to the shop and try the amp out.
Usually you get a warmer richer tone with valve or hybrid than fully solid state that tend to be harsher - usually.
Judging by the music you play I suspect that'll be what you want to hear.
Some of the Vox combo amps now have a range of effects built in, and are worth a look, though probably cost more than £150. I bought one for my son a year or so ago and IIRC it was over £200, but I dont recall the exact price anymore.0 -
Get yourself and your guitar along to a good music store and try different types out. A 30w Roland Cube is within your budget and probably the best bang for buck amp you can get.
Personally, I'd avoid hybrids, cheap valve driven amps and anything by Marshall at this price range.0
