EON want to increase my direct debit by 50%!

I have been with EON for a number of years, and am on a capped tariff till September. I was paying £91 for some time, and in Febraury received a letter saying that they were cutting my payments to £59 :j, which sum I have paid for the last 3 months.

I sent in my May meter reading, and got an email from them at the weekend saying that there was a credit on my account of approx £20 with they intended to refund me, as it is their policy to clear any sums at credit in spring ( they have never done this before!). The same email, however says that they have reviewed how much I should be paying and intend to increase this to £89. This makes no sense at all, as it will inevitably mean that they will have to refund a lump sum to me next year. I am fed up of the yo-yoing amounts, and would far rather that they took say £75, which looks like a more accurate assessment of what I use.

The reason why E.ON reduced you direct debit was to get you to zero balance at your annual review, which has now taken place and they refunded your £20.

E.ON have then calculated that your DD over the next 12 months should be £89. If your prices are capped till September then between then and your next annual review say May 2012 next year your prices are going to see a big increase right at the time when your consumption is at its highest over the winter so if anything £89 might not cover the cost of that increase.

    Hi kayl,

    Good info already given.

It does sound like the payments were reduced to get your account to a zero balance, this appears to have been pretty close as you were just £20 in credit.

The payments now will be set to start building up a credit balance over the summer months to help go towards the larger winter bills.

You can give us a call to go through the figures if this will help, also as your Capped tariff will be ending just before the winter the Direct Debit may need to be adjusted then.

If you need any more info, just let me know.

    Helena :)

I have spoken to them at length this morning, but feel that I am not getting anywhere. They have said that according to their records, the actual usage over the last year averaged £120 per month. According to the Energy Tracker on my account, I have averaged a decrease in usage of 46%, so cannot see how that can equate to a new figure of £89. The person to whom I spoke cannot understand this either, but said that he cannot access the tracker figures on his system to explain it

    Hi kayl,

The energy tracker is really only just a guide, it is always best to use your meter readings and accurate usage to calculate payments (Direct Debit).

The energy tracker only uses information from actual meter readings that we have billed to, so if you enter your readings quarterly and are billed to these readings the months in between on the tracker will use estimates. (this is why it's not 100% accurate).

I would use the accurate usage from last year from your account to calculate the payments, this is the most accurate way.
