Provisional insurance for own car (not parents' / friends etc)

Options
Hi,

I would like to buy a car to practice outside of my driving lessons and need some insurance for it. I have someone who can legally sit with me whilst i'm driving. The only problem I have found so far is certain companies - e.g. provisional marmalade only provide the insurance if you are being insured on someone else's car.

Also, if I was the registered owner of the car, is it possible for someone else to be the main policy holder (would this help with costs) ?

If anyone has used any or knows of any insurance companies which would cover driving in your own car this would be really helpful.

I am over 25 which should help to bring costs down a little I hope.

Any feedback gratefully recieved.

Thanks.

    collingwood annual,

insurance for your own car, buy monthly, doesn't need any other insurance in place, will automatically cancel when you pass though, but will give a full pro rata refund.

You should have no problem buying a normal policy with a provisional licence.

You can have another driver as the main (or additional but not main) driver (though be aware insurance companies are on the look out for this, so don't lie about who the main driver is.

Being over 25 doesn't make too much difference (compared with being 24 say), but you normally "lose" the extra excess payable for claims by young drivers under 25 - though you will still face the extra excess also charged for "inexperienced" drivers by most companies.

Be aware, a lot of companies charge a lot more when you pass your test as opposed to being on a provisional licence. Quite often it is cheaper to cancel and move companies, so check this if you get quotes, and factor it in.
(Also bear in mind whatever price they give you today to insure when you pass, could well double tomorrow, and certainly will if you try to ammend the policy halfway through)

It is a criminal offence (and may invalidate your cover) to give false information to obtain motor insurance. This includes mis-stating who the main driver of the vehicle is in order to lower premiums, called "fronting".
The insurance companies know all about it and will ask all sorts of interesting questions if you have a claim and they suspect it.

I have a provisional license and insure a car in my name and as me as main driver*. Its no more expensive than my husbands insurance for his car (sub £500). I second that you should ask when you take out the policy for them to quote on what they would charge after you pass your test though. Some wanted 3-4 times the provisional premium and others only put a £100 or so on top of the premium.

(*until this year when I have stopped lessons so hubby drives it more often, its now in my name, hubby as main driver but using my built up NCD. Yes, I have been having lessons for a long time.)

Phoned these guys and they do a 28 day and a 84 day policy (both non-refundable) but apparently i'm too old for annual insurance (this is only available to under 22yr olds).

Thanks for the info about checking prices for after I pass. I will bear this in mind and check it out :)

I don't intend to lie about who the main driver is but the other person on the policy may end up driving it in equal quantities so that was my reason for mentioning that.

Evlim, do you mind me asking who you had/have your car insured with to get it under £500 a year - that's a fab price?

Thanks - I'll try them later and see if they can do me as good a deal as they've done for you.
  • Been trying Aviva online but quoting service not working - will try later and post results.
