70k in 5 years for the older one is still 14k per year. Hardly low mileage and enough to have taken care of the DPF regeneration.

It's all about balance of probabilities.

That car could have done 3 years as a company mile muncher at 20K a year, then 2 years of being owned by an old granny doing 7k a year of local runs and now has a knackered DPF.

The newer, higher mileage, car is more likely to have a working DPF.

    You being serious?

    I am, that’s why I am on MSE! ;)

We are buying 2 replacement cars, so if both of them were £95 instead of the £30 it would start mounting up.

Also the Government are talking about bringing in an additional tax for Diesel cars. If it this new tax is based emissions again, I don't want to be stuck with a car that ends up costing X amount more on top normal road tax.

If we are talking about Ford Focuses then you must go for the 2008, the new Focus cam out not much before the 2006 was made and there were apparently the odd problem with the early ones, this is all second hand info from a bloke at work that traded a 2 yr old previous shape Focus for a new shape one in late 2005, as his dad and uncle work for Fords i will take his opinion as solid and factual.

Thiugh he did mention that for some reason the CMax at around the same time was more troublesome for some reason, not sure if the first CMax wqs based on the old or new Focus but i reckon the new Focus if i had to take a guess.

The 2008 model would normally be better equipped? Surely.

On the subject of the CMax i have been thinking about buying a 2.0 Zetec Auto CMax then getting it converted to LPG, they are a popular Motability choice at the moment and i reckon less of a handgrenade than a Scenic with an autobox, though i will admit that my wifes Clio has shown me that recent Renaults are very well built, as long as you stay away from too many electrical gimmics.

I will admit to having owned many Renaults over the years and have put really big mileages on some with little problems.

Also my parents where big Renault buyers, growing up we had Ren 12, 14, 19, 2x Ren 5. I have owned a Laguna, Clio, 2x Ren 21, Ren 25, 11 and a Safrane. All gave little problems, i actually put 120 k on a K Reg Renault 21, it was a fuel injected 1.7 yes it needed a set of driveshafts, a clutch and shocks all round but that was when it was showing over 150k. Car eventually retired to Kent with 220k on it at five years old! I heard it needed a gearbox at around 240k and was run into the ground hy the bloke that bought it off me.

No car i have ever owned was as comfy as that Ren 21 hatch.

Normally yes, but they have added a few add-ons it would seem, like full leather, electric & heated seats plus an upgraded sound system, all of which are not good enough reasons for me to choose the 2006 over the other one.

Thank you all for your advice, its looking like the 2008 would be the wise choice.
