Just recieved a quarterly gas bill for £1975!!!
NOT what I need with Xmas just around the corner.

I've tried to query it - apparently this is the first time they've taken an actual reading (rather than an estimate) for a while, hence the catching up.

What are peoples average monthly/quarterly gas bills?

  • We pay £100/month for gas and electric combined. What kind of property are you heating?

My god I would of had a heart attack... I read my own meter every month and send it off to the supplier by email.....

We have a 2 bed semi and the DD for the month is £55 this has stayed the same for over 2yrs now...

Find out if you can read your own meter so you don't get another fright:eek:

I have a 4 bed det and spend less than £400 total per year on elec and gas.
    I get my gas/elec from Ebico http://www.ebico.co.uk/en/open/pages/indexen.php

I'd suggest you read you meter and see if it compares with the gas board actual reading. If not, get it corrected.

If you need help to read the meter, see here (its on the Southern electric site, but that doesn't matter):
    http://www.southern-electric.co.uk/Home/CustomerServices/MeterAdvice.aspx
  • Also, if the reading is correct. Speak to the company and ask them to bill it from the last available actual reading before the estimates to the latest one.

It's more than likely all your "under-estimation" will now be charged at the high price of gas, whereas if it's over a long time, it will take a chunk off the balance.

Those are good figures Roger, any tips ??
  • can't gas companies only charge you for gas for the last 2 years. therefore. is there any scope of you arguing for a reduction if the last actual reading more than 2 years ago????

am not sure on this. is the any MSE that know more about this???

My next door neighbour got a gas bill last week for £1800 ! They got it wrong and it should have been only £18.

EDF have just lowered my Gas to £17 p/m and electricity to £27 p/m, both paid by direct debit.
I have a 2 bed terraced town house.

    Just the normal ones really
House is 12yrs old, double glazed, 8" insulation in loft.
I run my CH at around 17deg from 6am to 11pm, off overnight.
Turn off lights, don't use tumble driers (drying rack over bath),
use shower, gas cooking, fill kettle with enough water for drinks only,

and Ebico for good prices (no standing charges does make a difference with low consumption).

This happens a lot.. how long does it date back to? Scottish power did the same to me.. despite me phoning after every estimated bill with a meter reading that they just ignored. They should only be able to bill you for 2 years maximum.
