hi everyone, i wondered if anyone might be able help. (long one sorry!)

i have posted before about my laptop hard drive getting corrupt files, each time this has happened chkdsk will not run, and some major component of windows will not run either, each time however it's different parts that go kaput.

this time it is the usual, chkdsk, system restore, and defender, but the components that have gone as well are change startup programs and my Fn key commands.

i have probably done around 4 back to factory settings since christmas  and after a few weeks this problem manifests itself again but with slightly different effects.

i have eliminated vista updates causing the problem by having them switched off since the last factory reset (about 3 weeks ago), and the times before i have eliminated my own programs ie, itunes etc. by each time not installing one for a while.

i have kept all my pictures, music, and documents etc on an external hard drive and scanned them.

each time i have factory reset i have installed a different anti virus. scans are always clear.

i really am tearing my hair out now, i have 3 websites to build but i daren't start them as i know i'm going to be having to stop again because of this issue.

the only thing i've managed to get tonight is an sfc log after doing a sfc scannow command (administrator) sfc managed to 100% verify but then it said " windows resource protection could not perform the required operation!

the log has allsorts of corruption reports in it.

does anyone have any idea what's going on?!

thanks merlin x

have you tried to totally wipe the OS partition before reinstalling ?? Do you have the OS disk, or are you relying on a restore partition ??

What is the current problem, you run some programs, what happens?

Right click on the c drive, properties error checking from inside windows

download and run the hard disk diagnostics from the hard drive manufacturers website

check for rootkits, with tdsskiller, avast rootkit scan, and kaspersky

    post a hijackthis log

keeping all your important files in one place is risky, you need 2 copies for a backup, burn some dvd's

it wont run some programs at all, get a big loud noise and a message saying "windows cannot open this... check file path" or "windows has detected corrupt files..." it will ask me to run chkdsk. chkdsk wont schedule. i have tried it in safe mode command prompt still nothing. system restore wont run. other programs just flash up for a second then disappear. i cant access startup programs.

done the right click on C - same as above absolutely nothing apart from once time it ran with no boxes checked for about 3 seconds then disappeared.

i'll take a look for root kits as advised and post up a highjack log. will also try and find out what make the hard drive is many thanks :)

oh and dont worry i've got disks too - i just mentioned the portable above because i wanted to kinda re iterate that i haven't completely loaded my laptop since xmas! i darent! hehe!

uninstall vuze and conduit engine, scan with malwarebytes, try avast instead of avg

if you start a cmd prompt and do

    chkdsk c:

    what happens?

big loud noise -- from speakers?

yeah that horrible clangy noise like win 98 used to do with a big red cross warning? !

ok i'll do as you suggest now, however i did have avast on after the last factory restore and it made no difference?

i have scanned with avast rootkit - do i fix MBR? it pops up with a warning about rewriting a new one?

ok vuze toolbar and conduit gone, malwarebytes found absolutely nothing...

if i type chkdsk c: at command prompt it tells me as before:
    stage 1 of 3,
5 attribute records are corrupt, then at the bottom its says errors found, chkdsk cannot continue in read only mode.

If you are happy you have your data safe, and means of reinstall, I'd let avast fix the mbr

then do chkdsk c: /R and reboot

MBR fixed, chkdsk c: R failed again - rebooted straight to the login screen... :(

(took me a while to log in, kept saying my password was wrong then i realised i was typing in chkdsk.... :o)
