i have a laptop with 2 gb ram in 1 slot and the other one is empty.
Would memory be ok if i put 4gb into the empty slot to make 6gb of ram, or does is work better if slots have equal size memory.

Run the scanner on crucial.com or alternatively provide your make and model of laptopOwner of andrewhope.co.uk, hate cars and love them

Also bear in mind that unless you are running 64 bit Windows, it won't be able to utilise more than 3-and-a-bit Gb of your memory, so you'd be wasting your money upgrading to 6. For most day-to-day computing you should find 3Gb will perform adequately."The trouble with quotations on the Internet is that you never know whether they are genuine" - Charles Dickens0

Yes i ran crucial scan, i can upgrade to 8gb.
I am running 64 bit, i often run several programs at same time as well as downloading, was hoping extra ram would help me.
Would i be correct in thinking this?0 -
2GB is enough , more will help things but don't expect much. Only worth it with cheaper ddr3 ram -not older stuff.0

Won't help downloading, and unlikely to make any noticeable difference unless you are running some really heavy programs, if it's slow, post a hijackthis log!!

Check that free socket actually has a socket, because the crucial scanner will show it as free, but cant tell if theres a socket there for you to plug the new memory module into - I discovered this once after I had made the purchase (my fault for not looking first I suppose)0

You will notice a significant improvement upgrading to 6gb ram on your 64bit. And, yes you can add a 4gb ram on an empty slot but you have to know ram specs your laptop can accommodate. You can't keep a good man down...0
