Can you tell how pregnant a cat is if you've just met her?

Oh my God I'm exhausted!!!
All day long we waited and waited, she was purring, eating and drinking and quite happy apart from a little discharge for a couple of hours this morning.
9:45pm the first kitten emerged! On my bedroom floor! So much for all the beds and birthing stations. We were all standing on the landing peeping in. She then surprised us by trying to eat the baby (we thought) before picking it up by the head and running into my daughter's bed and burrowing under the duvet:eek:. All we could hear were the muffled cries of the baby. Cue complete panic, we were sure the baby would burrow to the edge of the bed and fall off or would suffocate from the weight of the duvet on top of her/him. We quickly grabbed dressing gowns to fill the gap between mattress and wall, and placed a clean duvet along the outer edge of the bed, and folded the duvet back to make a cave type thing. Mum settled right in and baby hasn't wandered too far since. I was shocked at how much those babies move and at the little cries they make - sooo cute!
Since then, we've had some more babies, and I've just caught a glimpse of mum eating the last placenta, which I could have done without, tbh. The bed will never be the same again, and my two daughters are homeless for a while, but mum and babies seem to be doing well so far. We think there are four so far, and all seem to be suckling at the moment.
Thank you all for the invaluable information and help - it certainly made me feel far more equipped to deal with her, and what to look out for. I'm just hoping her litter isn't too big, she's just little herself.
Ok, I'm off to see if I can get some photos, problem is they're all in quite a darkened area, so bear with me.I'm an adult and I can eat whatever I want whenever I want and I wish someone would take this power from me.

Aw well done to mummy cat
Sorry she chose the bed LOL!!!
Can't wait to see pics
Just remember that when they open their eyes (mine done it within the first week) not to use a flash for a while as their little eyes are sensitive x Wife and mother :jGrocery budget

Well, there are four babies, one black and three torties, and all snuggled up to mum who is purring like a freight train. Here is a photo, but it's hard to tell what anything is! I'll try for better tomorrow when we have some light.

Aw so cute!
On a slightly different note though - Would you call the vets and ask at what age you can bring her and the kittens in so that she can be scanned for a chip? I would be absolutely devasted if my cat left home and hormones can do funny things to a gal! She may have owners looking for her outside of your poster zone.House saving Targets:

There will be no need to sex them. The three torties are girls and the black one is probably a boy, just compare it to sisters. ( tortoiseshell are female and male torties are very rare - they have a chromosomal abnormality if they are male)0

They're beautiful - easy to forget how small they are when newborn. I had one cat who used to purr so loudly when she had kittens that you could hear her in the next room - sounds like this mother cat is similar
Making me broody now!0
