Could be various, russ has already posted a link which may be relevant, but only a few hide all the files, op has gone so who knows.

I based it from the error codes it generated, but clearly a rogue HDD type app either way. So many variants so can never be certain really.

I'm certain that closed has it right on this occasion.

The OP should follow the steps in the link provided to fix the problem.

I'll test it in sandbox when I'm back on my computer. Most threads are saying it is as you say, so probably is. I'd gone on one thread from the MBAM forums.

I'm sure it is just a way to update the Rules offline if you are denied Internet access.
Thought maybe I had missed a trick. :)

Anyway, was just concerned that it would confuse the OP further.

I'm sure that if she follows the steps within the link the closed has provided, she will get it sorted.

You were on the right track anyway.

We were all sure that it was fake and the files were simply hidden.

Let's hope the next update doesn't start with "I took it to PC World/local PC shop, and they reinstalled windows".

I'm sure the removal instructions are exactly the same.

The OP should follow the instructions there and be reassured that she will not lose any data.

Thanks for the consolation message, but I'd already posted it:

The removal for all these type of things are almost always the same, even if the animated gif and name of the rogue app is slightly different. Both links had the same fake error codes listed, the only critical difference is that the one originally posted also points out the possibility of a rootkit.

No issue, since closed invariably recommends tdsskiller.

I'm curious about the background to the malwarebytes corporation. Who exactly are the people running it? What are their credentials?

I ask because 15 years ago, senior figures at a leading European academic institution were claiming that the so-called experts in the computer security industry are often the authors of much of the malware...

The security experts are creating the problems, in order to be able to provide solutions to fight them.

In other words, it's the Problem-Reaction-Solution paradigm. But why? The anti-virus software business is a billion buck industry, so there's the key motive - money, lots of it.

If true, it would be a kind of corporate Munchausen by proxy but with a financial twist!

So what's the background to malwarebytes? Where did they rise from to become the world experts in the field? Where are they getting the virus definitions from, and why are they one step ahead of the other anti-virus s/w businesses who have been at this game for close to two decades?

Of the handful of people whose names are publicly associated with the development the MalwareBytes tool (pro version: $25) only one of those individuals has any sort of background in computer science. And from a brief google search of that man, his experience in security engineering, from what little can be found, doesn't exactly inspire..

Just three years ago, the lead developer at MalwareBytes was struggling to get a simple VisualBasic program running properly and was appealing for rudimentary help on internet forums. Curious that in such a short space of time, and with seemingly no seed capital, MalwareBytes has become one of THE names in online security for the Microsoft Windows operating system..

It wasn't a consolation message. It was an acknowledgement. :)

I think the rogue program is the one to which closed has linked. But the removal instructions are the same. Hence my comment.

So even if recuva was installed, nothing would have happened either way as the files were just hidden. Then we would have moved onto malwarebytes (as I had stated in post 2 below)... We didn't really need a massive 'no!' reaction did we?
Try http://www.piriform.com/recuva if the document? has been deleted. Does that work? MAKE BACKUP COPIES IF FOUND!

    If the computer has malware:
    Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.50 - FileHippo.com
and Install. Click UPDATE then CHECK FOR UPDATES. Then run a quick scan and delete everything found. Post log here.

Click UPDATE then CHECK FOR UPDATES then run a FULL SCAN. Delete everything found. Post log here.

I hope the coursework turns up.

Can you also elaborate what you mean by EVERYTHING is gone too?
