Baby car seat fabric - Mouldy.... Safe???

Hi all,

(Apologies if this should be in a different forum)...

We are soon to be expecting the arrival of our second child, due in just under three weeks.

The car seat (Maxi cosi cabriofix) that we used for my DD1 3 years ago had been stored in our garage until a few weeks ago when we got it out in preparation of getting everything ready.

The car seat fabric was slightly covered in mould where I suppose it had got a little damp whilst stored in the garage.

I removed the complete fabric, gave it a good scrub with dettol antibacterial and then washed it in the washing machine. I wiped all of the plastic on the car seat with dettol antibacterial.

The mould came out of the fabric and we have put the fabric back on the car seat.

Now my question is this - we obviously can't see any mould now, it's completely gone from the visable eye, but is the car seat "safe" or would there be mould that has penetrated into the depths of the fabric that would still remain? (The fabric isn't very thick).

The reason why I am asking this, and is unsure, is that we also had a mattress for the cotbed which has also gone mouldy! (We've learned our lessons of where to store things now... and the advice I have read on the internet is to get rid of the mattress as the mould would have penetrated deeper and you have no chance of getting all of it out.

Obviously the car seat fabric is a little different because it's much thinner so I am hoping that the mould we saw would have been all of it and it would have been washed out in the washing machine.

Thank you in advance for any advice you can give.

Presume you can't buy a new cover?

If it was me I would definitely bin the mattress, and probably think about a new car seat, unless it was particularly expensive

  • Thank you both for your replies.

It never occured to me to buy a new car seat fabric!!! I don't think it's cost efficient to buy a new car seat (over £100) but I will definitely be buying the new fabric £40.00.

    Thanks
