I have several of the above in my installed programmes,what are they for and can i delete the older ones?

Programs that are written in c++ require runtime libraries in order to function correctly. When you install a program it'll install the latest version of the libraries.
They *should* all be in the same place, so although you have several entries you will not have multiple copies. This is not always true as some programs require a very specific version (C++ is normally pretty good, Java is the pain).
To your question ... if it bothers you having so many entries you can try removing them all and just install the latest one from here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=a7b7a05e-6de6-4d3a-a423-37bf0912db84&displaylang=en0 -
