I am totally shocked at the way you have been treated and for the LA to u-turn with little or no explanation is equally as shocking. Now you must do what will make you feel the most secure and happy and I suspect staying put is not an option now. Unless your LL ditches the agent and gives you a private agreement. Could you perhaps explain to us how the u-turn came about? Did they admit they were wrong? Do they still disagree about the lock? Do they still want you out in 10 weeks at the end of your current tenancy? Well done you for staying so strong.

No they want me to sign a new agreement and stay another year.....

I would suggest that you don't take a contract but go periodic.

Well. That is a turn around. Either they realised they can't bully you and threaten you and/or the Landlord had a stiff word in there ear. Either way a relief for you. At least you can take your time to make the best decision for yourself and not be rushed into anything.
    Best of Luck

Quantum - has the LL been in touch directly with you? It sounds like he may have driven a rocket up their !!!!!! but, as has been said, it would be good to speak directly with him to see if you can sidestep the shambolic idiots.

Then again, they may now have to be really careful with you so could be good.

All the best in whatever you decide.

Good news. Well done and good to know that the assertive action produced a result. I'm guessing no apology from the agent yet?

Do keep us up to date if there is any more conversation with the LL. It might be worth it, if only to underscore how the agents appeared to be undermining him for their own internal reasons.

Thanks for letting us know by the way.

    what are the benefits?
  • I have not heard directly from the LL at any stage. But I think this U turn must have to do with the landlord receiving my letter. It just wouldn't make financial sense for the LL to let me go. I'm guaranteed to pay the rent (at least I've managed to do so for nearly 3 years!) and in all these years the only maintenance issue they've had to deal with was some minor thing that went wrong with the boiler 2.5 years ago. Why would any sane BTL LL want to lose a sure thing and risk an unknown tenant who might or might not pay the rent along the line etc etc?

If the Letting Agent returns to his antics, you can leave with a months notice. If you sign up for another year, then the Agent may think that you are bound in for a year so he does not need to behave himself quite so much.
