Need Some Advice Please - Moving into New Flat in Manchester
Hey Guys,
I am an international student and will be moving into a new flat in June. Have been staying in halls before this so I need some advice regarding an electricity provider. Agency told me that it's all electricity and no gas. Also, will definitely be staying for 6 months, and have no idea if I will be staying beyond that period. Therefore I will not be able to commit to any 12-month contracts.
I've tried looking at the websites linked from the articles here, but they are all price comparison websites. They are asking me questions that I cannot answer, i.e. current supplier, average spend, etc.
Can I kindly ask for some advice for selecting the cheapest electricity provider in my area (M1 7AJ, Manchester) and how I can go about subscribing? Also, how long will it take from the subscription date to actual commencement of service? Need to know so I can plan in advance. Wouldn't want to move into a flat with no electricity.
Thank you for your time and I appreciate your help!
Cheers,
Nicholas

Ask the agency nearer your move-in date whether the electricity is connected or needs to be re-connected.
Normally when you move into a new place, the electricity is already being supplied by a particular company. The agency should know which one it is; you take meter readings on the day you move in (take photos too if you can easily do so e.g. on your phone) and contact the company with the details. You could even ring the company a couple of days before moving in if you want to, but after you've moved in is usually OK.
Again, usually, you are on the company's standard tariff to start with. This is often quite expensive. You can then do comparisons to find the most competitive company and tariff for your usage. Many do have 12 month or other fixed terms, but have a look on their website for the terms and conditions - see if the fee for cancellation during the fixed period is waived if the reason for cancelling is due to a house move (and whether they require you to move the supply to a new property or not).0
