Eligible for Benefits between leaving school and starting Uni?

He can't claim JSA until he's 18 - and I think you might find that CB/CTC will continue if you let them know that he's staying in f/t education (unless you tell them otherwise, they'll assume he's leaving).0

Exactly.
When did you advise the CB people that he was returning to full-time eduation in September?
If you did not, how are they to know?
You should receive CB and CTC until August 31 unless he works over 24 hours a week.
Junior's grants and loans cover his living costs from September 1 even if he does not start until a few weeks later. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

Thanks everyone for your replies, all very helpful.
I haven't been in touch with CB since last summer when I got a form to fill in to say he was staying on at school, but I will give them a ring to say he will be going to Uni in September.0 -
I have no idea whether you have a partner OP, but this is assuming you do not...
Your son is nearly 18 and he will be an adult as far as Council Tax are concerned. You will need to inform them that he is still at school (for now) and that CB is still being paid for him until 31 Aug (take the letter CB will send you once you inform them). As soon as you have any confirmation of his Uni acceptance and date of leaving your home to go to uni you should tell them and they will take him off the CT until he returns in June. Students do not have to pay CT, but if you are getting the single person discount you must keep CT updated.
My local CT peeps were a nightmare. I had to pay the full amount for a week between the Cb ending and DS leaving to go to uni. I'm sure this was avoidable but as far as they were concerned because he hadn't matriculated he wasn't a student.
It's only a game

Just to update everyone on this in case it helps someone else - I contacted CB and CTC as advised; it took a while to get a response (guess they were busy with the renewal forms being sent back!) and both CB and CTC are to be paid until September.
Thanks for all the advice, great as usual.
Thanks also for the advice about the council tax, it doesn't apply to us as DH and I are both working (SE) so we don't get any reduction or benefit but nice of you to be thoughtful about it anyway.0
