Your best bet is too contact your local rider training centre and they will get it all sorted for you, or how about doing your cbt just now so you can ride a 125 to get a bit of experience on the road (iam asuming your 17 or over)
  • http://www.geton.co.uk/ gives a good overview of the current rules. You can do a CBT now to get started, but as I assume you're nearly 21 I'd hang on until then to do the training and test for Direct Access, which gives you a full licence with no restriction on engine size (apart from insurance of course).

Speak to a local training school, they might be happy for you to begin training on a 125 before then.

Don't rush into a full licence before you're 21, you'll get a restricted licence and have to wait 2 years for the restriction to end, even though you turn 21 before then (you can take a further test to end the restriction sooner, but it's pretty pointless unless you're desperate to ride something bigger than a 125 now).

Best to get it done before 2013 - possible new rules come in then which bring in more restrictions and put the direct access age up to 24+ - it's out to consultation at the moment so nothing's definite.

I wouldn't recommend he does lessons on a 125 now if he's planning on doing DAS in 9 months time, best to just wait, get his theory test done eitehr now or close to when he goes for the CBT, then do the CBT then go straight onto a DAS course, licence should be sorted in a couple of weeks then if all goes to plan.

The other option is to get a CBT, get his own 125, ride about on that for a while for experience, then go back and do the test on the schools 500, then either sell the 125 for a bigger bike or keep it, but that obviously requires the outlay of money for the 125.

I was gonna get the theory and cbt done asap as i have saved enough for that. But with the rest of my savings i dont know if to get a 125 or to keep saving and go straight for DAS. Would you reccommend i get a 125 first for a bit of experience?

It's not gonna hurt, what do you intend to do after you pass your test? Would funds allow a 125 now?

So do you intend to buy a big bike if/when you pass via direct access?
