Help needed on redundancy v 'new' role, but nothing in writing!

Options
Hope someone out there may be able to help.

I was told - informally - that due to cutbacks, the company can no longer to employ me on my current salary. However, they claim they want to keep me!

The options sketched out to me (but absolutely nothing in writing and no witnesses) are apply for a 'new' job being created, which is an amalgamation of someone else's position and parts of mine, at a hugely reduced salary, or take redundancy.

My worry is, I am being pressured into making a decision but have been given absolutely nothing in writing. It's been suggested that if I indicate I'm willing to apply for the new post, both me and a colleague will be issued with our 'at risk' letters, but how can I be certain of that when I don't trust them as far as I could spit?

I've had strong hints that if I go for the job, I'll get it, but would I still be able to take it on a trial basis and say 'no' after a month and opt for redundancy? I hate the fact that this could effectively put someone else out of a job.

If I get a job with another company in the meantime, before this situation is settled, could the fact my current employers have given me nothing in writing yet mean I could lose out on redundancy, even though I've only been looking since the 'informnal' discussion? I've been there over 10 years, so it would be a reasonable amount.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

They are trying to con you to agreeing to the new roll so they don't need to pay redundancy.

see this thread and what happened to the poster.

    Don't agree to anything.

This is No.1 time think about others but they will all be looking out for themselves.

THere are a number of ways to play this.

My instinct would be to throw a few terms into the next conversation.

    Something like

If you can't afford me and considering changing my roll should you not put me at risk of redundancy first and then enter into consultation so we can discuss the option in a meaningfull way.

If you really want to keep me I am sure there must be an alternative new roll that is more suitable than the one you described so far.

THis might trigger the propper process, alternatively you could just not be ready to make up your mind and drag it out.

AIUI, You need to get through the at risk, consultancy and have the termination notice in your hand to be in the position to actual get pad redundacy. and then if you get a job and want out quicker that the 10 weeks you need to look at counter notice.

DO NOT tell them you are looking for work and definately not if you find anything, fast track to no redundancy.
  • Thanks getmore4less, it certainly feels like they're trying to play me. It sticks in the craw that they flatter my skills, experience and achievements, but in the next breath tell me they can't afford to pay me the salary they agreed to!

I'll check out that thread now...
